Pimsleur Norwegian

Norwegian (Norsk) is a North Germanic language spoken primarily in Norway, where it is an official language. Together with Swedish and Danish, Norwegian forms a continuum of more or less mutually intelligible local and regional variants.

These continental Scandinavian languages together with the insular languages Faroese and Icelandic, as well as some extinct languages, constitute the North Germanic languages (also called Scandinavian languages). Faroese and Icelandic are no longer mutually intelligible with Norwegian in their spoken form, because continental Scandinavian has diverged from them.

As established by law and governmental policy, there are two official forms of written Norwegian — Bokmål (literally "book language") and Nynorsk (literally "new Norwegian"). The Norwegian Language Council recommends the terms "Norwegian Bokmål" and "Norwegian Nynorsk" in English.

There is no officially sanctioned standard of spoken Norwegian, but the sociolect of the urban upper and middle class in East Norway, upon which Bokmål is primarily based, is the form generally taught to foreign students. This so-called Standard Østnorsk (Standard East Norwegian) can be regarded as a de facto spoken standard for Bokmål.

What customers say about the Pimsleur NORWEGIAN audios:

Boy, this method WORKS!
I have attempted several methods in learning Norwegian. My main stumbling block was pronunciation and an over-emphasis on grammar. What I needed was an easier way to learn pronunciation and something that would be more natural to learn. I have found that in this Pimsleur Norwegian audio!
What this audio does is teach you the language in a way that I think most humans learned to speak, by listening and repeating with an understanding what the words mean. It starts slowly, but does not so slow as you lose interest. On the contrary, these audios keep your interest at every turn. First of all, each lesson is 30 minutes long, not too long as to lose interest and sharpness but long enough to give you a solid lesson. Next each lesson builds on previous lessons and quite often somethig you learned 90 minutes ago creeps up and makes sure you remember the whole course.
This is mostly a listening course. There is a tiny booklet included but its main purpose is to teach you to recognize the words you have already verbally learned. Just as a child learns to speak before reading, this course does the same thing. I would HIGHLY recommend this course to beginners and would recommend using this course ALONE before any other study aids. Once this course has been mastered then you can comfortably move on to other aids. Again, this is a great course! -- A student, Colorado, USA

Good use of commute time and rapid prep for travel.
Love the Pimsleur series because I can study while commuting. I have used them primarily to learn some basic language skills to enhance travel experience. Pimsleur teaches the basics very well. You learn to pronounce a small amount extremely well and become fluent quickly.
It does NOT teach extensive vocabulary, grammar intricacies or complex conversation.
1)Good use of commute time, less dangerous than curling hair :=)
2)Good rapid prep for visiting a new country
